Arrrrrrrgghhh You Ready?

Last year I ran my second marathon, the 2010 Gasparilla Half Marathon.  It is the best overall race I have ever participated in.  I couldn't skip the chance to sign up this year, especially after the disappointing race experience in West Palm.  I love the theme, the city, the expo, the people.  I WILL RUN FOR BOOTY!

Goals
The goal of any first race should be to finish.  That's usually my goal for any race since I am not a speed demon.  I wish I was faster and I think I just accepted that I am slow.  I love challenging myself and since this week of training went so well (and anything is possible!), I have created some time goals for my half marathon.  I've read a few places to set three time goals for your race.  The first goal being the ultimate goal, the goal that would most likely bring you to tears if you reached.  The second would be awesome and third would be great too.  My goals are:
Goal A: 2:10
Goal B: 2:15
Goal C: 2:16
In order for me to reach my A goal, I have to increase my speed and be DEDICATED to my plan.  So...I bring you THE PLAN.

How I WILL increase my speed:
1. Perform speed work and tempo run once per week.
2. Lose Weight.  According to Runner's World, "A five-pound weight loss can take more than two minutes off your half-marathon time. Plus, weight loss can reduce your injury risk and improve your biomechanics." I have a goal and to reach that goal I have to lose 9 pounds.  I will TRACK my food everyday and I will try to attend a weight watchers meeting weekly.
3. Yoga at least three times a week and incorporate yoga poses into my stretching routine.
4. Strength training 3x per week.
5. Core strengthening 3x per week.

It seems simple on paper... now I just have to stick to the plan.  6 weeks until Gasparilla. :)

Anything is Possible

This week was a good week for running.  I had an awesome speed work run on Thursday night.  Probably the best run I've had in 3-4 months.  I pushed myself and I felt amazing after.  Yesterday, on my long run I ran 8 miles.  I was still sore from my speed work on Thursday and my cycle on Friday so I started off slow.  I didn't mind.  I'm carrying around a few extra pounds, just getting back into training, and my back has been nagging me recently.  I decided that I was going to try to focus on negative splits.  Negative splits is the idea that you will run the 2nd half of your run faster than the first half of your run.  You can read more about it on the Runner's World website

Here were my stats:
Mile 1: 10:48
Mile 2: 11:03
Mile 3: 11:00
Mile 4: 10:50
Mile 5: 10:54
Mile 6: 10:46
Mile 7: 10:38
Mile 8:  9:54 <----Awesome!!!!

I definately started off faster than I should have.  I uploaded my stats from my Garmin and was looking at my Marathon.  I definately believe part of the reason I didn't finish as fast was becuase I went WAY TO FAST in the beginning.  I was running 10:00, 10:10 miles.  Now that I have run a Marathon, several half Marathons, and 5ks.  I am starting to get more into the science of training.  Plus, I want to PR (Personal Record) at the Gasparilla half at the end of February.

I definately pushed myself during this run and I definately want to focus on negative splits in the future.  I think sometimes I pysche myself out before a run.  For some reason, I am scared I won't be able to.  Which brings me (finally)...to the whole point of this post.  My run was definately getting harder as I pushed myself.  Somtime around mile 6, I thought to myself YOU RAN A MARATHON, you can BUST YOUR BUTT and finish these last two miles faster than you did in the beginning.  It only took me a month and half later, but it finally hit me.  I ran a marathon and now I CAN DO ANYTHING!!!!!!  I think I was so disappointed deep down that it took me so long 5:16 to run my marathonn that I didn't want to celebrate.  I dispised the training.  But, I did it.  I didn't finish my training properly.  But, I did it.  I will spend the next 6 weeks training my butt off to PR at Gasparilla, because ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!

“I’ve learned that finishing a marathon isn’t just an athletic achievement. It’s a state of mind; a state of mind that says anything is possible.”

Blue Springs Manatee Trip!

I started making a list of things I want to do -- some general things, some specific places I want to visit in Florida.  There are so many great things to do here that I could never experience in Ohio.  Every time I try something different or new, it makes me feel like a kid.  I still remember the first time I saw the boil at Blue Springs.  I was amazed.  I wanted to buy snorkeling gear and a waterproof camera immediately (never did though).  Seeing the manatee's is on my list; so, when Jason called me yesterday morning and asked me if I could skip my run to go to Blue Springs to see the Manatee's, I jumped at the opportunity.  My six mile run can wait until Sunday!!! :)

We woke up about 5:30AM (mostly because I have a freak internal alarm clock).  We made banana nut and blueberry pancakes that were amazing.  But sadly, my wanna-be food blogger self forgot to take a picture.  We got to Jason's brothers house at 7 to pack the cooler and truck up.  Jason had two hats this morning.  The white one, aka the penis hat and the child size black hat.  Both were horrible.  However, the neon yellow circa 1987 sunglasses were awesome.

Jason and I had to stop and get lime juice for Jared so I wasn't able to capture the Short Bus being put in the water.  We were waiting for some more friends to join so Jason was holding the boat.
It was a beautiful morning, sunny and about 52 degrees.   It later warmed up to 70 degrees.
Abby enjoyed some powdered sugar donuts while we waited.  She is such a cutie isn't she?  She turns 2 years old next week.

Abby and Braden on the way to the Springs!
It took about an hour to travel to Blue Springs.  We pulled up to the right of those canoe's.
The kids (little and big) hit up the playground first.  I was so excited I headed up to the boardwalk to get my frist climpse of some Manatee!  You can see these two guys below.  There were hanging out about 50 feet from the St. John's.  The Springs maintain a temperature of 72 degrees all year round.  The manatee cannot survive for long periods of time in water below 60 degrees.  So, when it's cold outside they make their way to springs to keep warm.  When it gets warmer later in the day they venture back to the St. John's.  Most of them were in sunny spots in the springs.

We made our way down the boardwalk and were able to see a lot of manatee hanging out in the sun.  There was also a large gator hanging out with them.
I am very scared of gators.  I will get in lakes and do open water swims, but in the back of my head I am thinking about a gator attacking me.  After I saw this gator, I realized, when we swam in these springs in the summer, I was told there would be no gators in there.  Even though it's abnormal for a gator to be there, I am still going to be paranoid when we go back to the springs to swim when it is warm.

I hope my poisonous buckeye blood will keep these gators away!
The white marks on the skin of the manatee are scars from boats, mostly boat propellers.  There are several no wake zones to avoid injuring manatee.  We actually had to go around one on the way back.  There are several precautions to prevent manatee deaths because they are an endangered species.

We went further down to the platform, where we jumped into the springs in the summer.  We found this guy right below us and he swam under the platform.  It was nice to be able to see one close up.

Then, we saw this baby manatee.

I really wanted a picture of Jason and I for the blog and I gave a guy, who looked like he would do a good job, take a picture.  However, he did not get any of the background in.  Oh well.
Then we headed down bird house creek.  It's a cut through to another section of the river.  People decorate bird houses and hang them from trees.

We saw this Dirty D tree house and I had to get a picture of it for my friend Danielle.  One of her nicknames is Dirty D.  We celebrated Dirty D turns thirty in Vegas this past April.

We headed back to Highbanks to drop someone off and we got some boiled peanuts!!! They are warm, soft, and tasty!!! YUMMY!!! They are all over Florida.  People sell them on the side of the road.

Andrew and Abby resting on the way back.
This was a wonderful trip and worth waking up early to see.  It is so different to be able to see animals in their natural habitat, instead of a relatively small tank in a zoo.   It's beautiful and surreal.  I also was able to see a bald eagle today.

I am also glad I was able to cross something off my list so early in the year.  I plan on posting my list (once it is complete) and blogging as much as I can about the different things I am doing.  Next week I hope to go to the Withlacoochee State Park, northwest of Orlando, and ride part of the 46 mile bike trail!! WOOHOO!!!

Expectations

Expectations are exhausting and restricting.  The fewer expectations you have, the more you can live spontaneously and joyfully.  The more you expect from others, the more often you will feel let down.  And trying to meet the expectations others have of you is often futile.

I was cleaning and found this post it note with this quote on it that I used to having hanging on my computer monitor.  I definitely have a problem with expectations. I know I put too many expectations on everyone and everything.   I first learned of it when my Dad told me a few years ago that you can't EXPECT people to do things.  You have to ask if you want/need something or of specific actions/things from others make you happy.

Maybe if I quit EXPECTING people do to things, or things to happen, I would be less stressed when things don't go as I SEE them happening.

2010 Year in Review

I'm usually not into making New Year's Resolutions, but this year I am compelled to write a record of my goals. I spent a lot of time over Christmas thinking about, well...everything! Simple things like appreciating what you have, my fitness aspirations, career goals, and healthy living.

I spent a good amount of time of 2010 unhappy. I'm not talking about a few days where I really missed my family or was down about something, I was depressed. I spent a lot of time trying to be healthy -- exercising and trying to make more educated and good food choices. But, I didn't have the best mental health. I let many things overwhelm me to a point where I was sick, more than once. My goals this year have a theme - to be an all-around healthy person, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally.

I have many objectives for starting this blog (other than post pictures of my food and pretend I am a food blogger). I believe if you write things down you become more accountable, but, most importantly it will allow me to reflect on my growth and have a RECORD of all the wonderful things in life (instead of focusing on the negative).

I did have some obstacles in 2010, but it was a year filled with a lot of great experiences and many accomplishments (including completing my first Marathon)! Before I share my goals for 2011, here are the highlights of 2010:
